I would have to agree with the author. Recycling of electronic products in fact is not an option but a must. Computers for example though already unwanted by original owners are actually still very useful. It could even be "gold" to some who badly and legitimately need it but couldn't afford it. Recycling or better yet re-using them would really be a great idea.

I could rant about business models, cost efficiency and ethics, but i'll just say: Be forewarned!. Check that your chosen Electronics recycler actually recycles your waste and doesn't send is to developing countries. If you're sending your computer to a charity, make sure that they're reputable and no selling your compuer on to traders in developing countries. These countries have no statute in place for dealing with this toxic waste carefully and so thousands of people are dying as a direct result of breaking down our old e-waste in the open, polluting their groundwater and breathing in toxic fumes.

Over here we recycle computers by giving them direct to charity shops who clean them up and send them out to places like schools in Africa. Most major charities also have some form of computer and/or moble phone collection strategy which are then recycled for use in poorer countries.

I use a company called Computation to recycle my computer hardware. They pick up big quantities, are friendly, AND they even provide you with a certificate of recycling and secure data destruction.
