De-Listed From DMOZ

Published by Tom at 1:03 pm under General Blog Info, Webmaster Resources

I posted a while back that my humble blog got listed on DMOZ. I thought it was cool and maybe I could get some benefits. However, I checked yesterday and it was no longer in their directory. I am not sure what is up with that it restores my opinion that DMOZ sucks. They use to be the end all to be all for web directories but now they offer very little benefits for the hassle to list with them.

Just to navigate their massive categories will give any webmaster a headache. I received 5 visits in over a month from their directory and maybe that was their editors.  Oh well, I guess I really did not  need them anyway.

What is your opinion of DMOZ?

While dmoz is great for seo purposes it is not a great traffic generator. Yes it helps your serps greatly, but you are right who in their right mind is going to search their categories and try to figure it out just to find a website.

The problem I see with dmoz is that their editors will tend to overlook good sites due to personal reasons. This was something that was discussed on one of the forums I regular just last week. A former editor admitted he would not normally even consider submitted sites since he thought they were all trash. This is highly unprofessional, but a large problem with being listed in dmoz and other similar directories.

Many editors will use their position to help keep their competitions websites from being listed if they can. This is something that is going to keep happening with dmoz as it currently is. The real dilemma is that the site is so vast and the shear number of daily submissions is to overwhelming for only a few editors to handle.

My opinion about DMOZ is that it is as any other community that got to big. It’s crowded with prestige-sullen kids with a bit of power. So, agree, it sucks.
