Leaving Blog Comments

Published by Tom at 9:43 am under Search Engine Optimization

One of the best ways to increase back links for blog and website owners is by adding comments to related topic blogs. Of course, some are no follow links and some are do follow links. I explained in my post Checking for No Follow Links how to tell the difference.

The key to getting good back links from a blog comment is to offer something in return. People write blogs so that they are read and hopefully appreciated. With that in mind, when you leave a comment, read the post and comment something constructive about the post. Stuff like “thanks for the info”, “wow that is interesting”, and other small meaningless comments will most likely get your comment deleted or marked as spam.

Most blog owners do not mind giving a back link to you when you leave a quality comment. Speaking for myself, I own 7 blogs and I moderate all comments. If they are on topic with my post and not just trying to spam, I will approve them. When I leave comments, I always read the post carefully and I will comment with my opinion on the post either agreeing or disagreeing. This shows the blog owner that you are not just spamming his/her blog.

Another thing to keep in mind is that there is only one place to get a link in most blogs. That spot is where it asks for your website URL. Putting links in your comments will only result in no follow links and could result in having your comments removed.

Blog owners are not stupid and they know a majority of comments are done so the commenter can get a back link. However, they will not tolerate spam and will only approve comments that mean something and offer a value to the conversation. Leaving quality comments will not only benefit you with a good back link, it will also keep your reputation intact.

With all that said, get out there and leave some quality comments and build up your back links. It is a very important key in Search Engine Optimization.

So when you place your website URL in the little box above the comment box it provides a backward link?

What about what I’ve been told about needing keywords in anchor text for back links? Is the “website” box the place to leave some html code to supply the appropriate anchor text and link?

Thanks in for explaining this stuff! While I don’t mind leaving comments - why not get the most mileage, right?

The question is - do do-follow links attribute anything to search engine positioning? - I have always commented on blogs, so am unsure as to what would happen if I stop?

As I understand it - only google ignore no follow?

I agree of course also that blog comments are super for backlinks, but don’t forget, no follow can and still should be used to build backlinks…doesn’t hurt to use a few no follows as well. OF course Do follow are a little higher for link juice, but no follow is ok too….doesn’t hurt right?

Robert, if you want to put “anchor text” with a link that points back to your website, just put the keyword you want to target (for example: how to make money)..you would use how to make money as your NAME! You name is what will show as the so called “anchor text”…just a tip.

As a fellow blog owner in the internet marketing niche, I am forever seeing someone’s attempt to get a backlink by leaving such comments as in this post. They are really annoying especially when there is absolutely no attempt at creativity.

I personally don’t mind people leaving their comments and backlinks if the comments add value to the conversation in some way and improving the experience for my readership or viewership.

I don’t mind if the comments disagree with my post and I don’t even care if people slag me off which people have done in the past. I still allow for the comments to be published because when people read them they invariably think the person who wrote the comment is the one with the issue - not the blog owner. It quite probably even does the blog owner favours because they seem indifferent to the abusive comments.

Fellow bloggers understand this need to contribute valuable comments the most, so in myexperience, other blog owners leave the best comments.
